It is that the same people who love AI most fear it most.
The study, which Anthropic claims is the largest multilingual qualitative research project ever conducted, found that professional excellence tops the wish list: 18.8% of respondents want AI to handle routine tasks so they can focus on higher-value work. That is followed by personal transformation (13.7%), life management (13.5%), and time freedom (11.1%). These are not abstract aspirations — they are deeply practical. "I receive 100 to 150 text messages per day from doctors and nurses," one U.S. healthcare worker told researchers. "Since implementing AI, the pressure of documentation has been lifted. I have more patience with nurses, more time to explain things to family members."
But here is what makes the findings uncomfortable: Anthropic calls it the "light and shade" problem. The things people love most about AI are often the things they fear most. People who valued AI as emotional support — a companion after loss, a lifeline during war — were three times more likely to express fear of becoming dependent on it. According to Euronews, "AI should be cleaning windows and emptying the dishwasher so I can paint and write poetry," one German respondent said. "Right now it is exactly the other way around."
The geographic split is stark. Users in North America, Western Europe, and Oceania worry about governance gaps, regulatory failure, and surveillance. Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and South Asia are far more positive — and see AI as an economic equalizer. "I am in a tech-disadvantaged country, and I cannot afford many failures," an entrepreneur in Cameroon told researchers. "With AI, I have reached professional level in cybersecurity, UX design, marketing, and project management simultaneously. It is an equalizer." The pattern tracks with economic reality: where AI is already embedded in workplaces, people can see the disruption coming. Where it is still aspirational, the hope outpaces the anxiety.
One profession stands out for the dilemma it faces: lawyers. Nearly half have encountered AI unreliability firsthand — wrong outputs, bad advice, systems that sounded confident and were dead wrong. They also report the highest rates of realized decision-making benefits of any profession. They are, in other words, getting the most upside and the most downside simultaneously. "I use AI to review contracts, save time," one lawyer said, "and at the same time I fear: am I losing my ability to read by myself? Thinking was the last frontier."
The study found that 81% of respondents said AI had already taken a step toward their stated vision. Productivity was the most common delivery: 32% reported dramatic speedups in work, automation of repetitive tasks. But 18.9% said AI had failed to deliver what they expected — outputs were inaccurate, unreliable, or simply not capable of what they envisioned.
The fears are specific and quantifiable. 27% worry about AI making poor or incorrect decisions. 22% fear impact on jobs and the economy. 22% worry about AI making decisions without human oversight. 16% fear losing the ability to think critically. 15% worry about insufficient regulation and unclear accountability. Only 11% reported zero fears about AI.
Methodologically, there is a wrinkle worth noting: Anthropic used a version of Claude to conduct the interviews. Respondents were Claude.ai users who opted in — meaning the sample is self-selected and already comfortable with AI. The findings reflect the views of people who are, at minimum, engaged enough with AI to create an account. That is not a representative slice of global public opinion. According to Anthropic's study, the company acknowledges this in the study's appendix, noting limitations around self-selection and the fact that respondents were informed their responses might be published. It is a rigorous acknowledgment, but it means the results skew toward the AI-convinced.
What does this mean for builders and investors? The demand signal is clear: people do not want AI to replace them — they want it to handle the cognitive overhead that has been slowly consuming their lives. The administrative burden, the documentation, the scheduling. They want to get back to the work that actually matters to them, and the relationships that actually matter. The companies that deliver on that — making people better at their jobs rather than redundant — will win the trust of the 81% who already see AI moving in the right direction. The ones that deepen the dependency while failing on reliability will lose the 18.9% who are already disappointed.
Anthropic says the findings will inform how it continues developing Claude. If the company takes the "light and shade" finding seriously, the next version of their assistant might need to be more transparent about its own limitations — not because users cannot handle the truth, but because the people who love it most are the ones most afraid of what they are giving up.
