Samsung will be the first exclusive HBM4 supplier for OpenAI's Titan chip, according to multiple reports out of South Korea. The deal, originally reported by the Korean Economic Daily and confirmed by Reuters, will see Samsung provide up to 800 million gigabits of 12-layer HBM4 memory in the second half of 2026 — roughly 7% of Samsung's total planned HBM production for the year, and the third-largest volume after Nvidia and AMD supply agreements.
Titan is OpenAI's first in-house AI processor, developed in partnership with Broadcom and expected to enter production at TSMC in the third quarter with a launch targeted for year-end. The chip represents OpenAI's most concrete move yet to reduce its dependence on general-purpose Nvidia GPUs — a dependency that has made the company both a massive customer and a captive of the GPU market's tight supply.
The motivation is inference, not training. Industry sources cited by Business Korea note that OpenAI has determined it needs custom silicon purpose-built for its models rather than Nvidia's broadly optimized AI chips. As inference workloads have come to dominate AI deployment, the efficiency calculus has shifted: a chip optimized for running ChatGPT queries can deliver better performance-per-dollar than a general-purpose accelerator.
Samsung's win here is notable because it breaks a pattern. Nvidia's dominant AI accelerator platform uses HBM from SK Hynix almost exclusively. By securing Samsung as the memory supplier for Titan, OpenAI is building a supply chain that doesn't route entirely through either Nvidia's preferred partners or TSMC's standard ecosystem plays.
The relationship between Samsung and OpenAI goes back to last October, when the two companies signed a letter of intent for Samsung to supply memory chips for OpenAI's Stargate data center project — the $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative announced with the Trump administration. The Titan deal deepens that tie. Industry sources tell TrendForce that because Samsung is OpenAI's first HBM4 supplier, the memory maker is likely positioned for second- and third-generation Titan chips as well.
Samsung is investing heavily to support the business. The company is allocating more than half of its Pyeongtaek foundry capacity to HBM4 base die production — the critical interface layer between memory and logic — using its 4-nanometer foundry process. Pyeongtaek utilization has reportedly surpassed 90%, driven by internal AI chip orders as external foundry demand has been insufficient to fully load the lines.
The HBM4 base die shift itself is a structural change. With previous HBM generations, both base die and DRAM were largely handled by the memory division. HBM4's performance requirements are pushing customers like Nvidia and AMD to demand foundry-quality base die production — which plays to Samsung's integrated manufacturing advantage across memory and logic.
Samsung also announced a memorandum of understanding with AMD this week to expand their strategic partnership on AI memory, with Samsung serving as a key HBM4 supplier for AMD's upcoming AI GPUs. That deal reinforces Samsung's position as a major HBM4 supplier to the AI chip industry broadly.
Neither Samsung nor OpenAI commented on the Titan supply agreement. Samsung declined to comment; OpenAI was not immediately available.
What's at stake: The Titan deal is the most visible signal yet that OpenAI is serious about building its own silicon stack. If the chip performs, it could over time reduce OpenAI's GPU procurement costs and give it more control over inference economics. For Samsung, the deal is a proof point that its HBM4 can win against SK Hynix in the highest-profile AI memory competition outside Nvidia's own supply chain.
The question is execution. TSMC's advanced packaging capacity is tight, and Broadcom's chip design track record outside its networking business is less established than Nvidia's. The 800 million gigabits of HBM4 Samsung is committing to deliver in the second half of 2026 is a meaningful bet on Titan's production ramp.
