OpenAI Acquires Promptfoo to Boost AI Security in Enterprise Products
OpenAI is acquiring Promptfoo, an AI security platform that helps enterprises find and fix vulnerabilities in AI systems during development. The deal will integrate Promptfoo's tools into OpenAI Frontier, the company's platform for building AI coworkers.
"Promptfoo brings deep engineering expertise in evaluating, securing, and testing AI systems at enterprise scale," said Srinivas Narayanan, CTO of B2B Applications at OpenAI. "Their work helps businesses deploy secure and reliable AI applications."
The Promptfoo team, led by co-founders Ian Webster and Michael D'Angelo, has built tools trusted by over 25% of Fortune 500 companies. They also maintain a widely used open-source CLI and library for evaluating and red-teaming LLM applications.
As enterprises deploy AI agents into real workflows, evaluation and security become critical. The acquisition aims to give customers automated security testing, red-teaming capabilities, and integrated reporting for governance and compliance.
"We started Promptfoo because developers needed a practical way to secure AI systems," Webster said. "As AI agents become more connected to real data and systems, securing and validating them is more challenging and important than ever."
The open-source project will continue, and the team will work on integrated enterprise capabilities within Frontier. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions.
