The constraint shaped the whole pipeline. Ink is carbon, papyrus is carbon, so standard X-ray sees nothing. Machine learning picks up the faint texture carbon ink leaves on the surface, and the writing shows up. A 20-year bet, a roughly $1 million public prize pot, a synchrotron, and an undergraduate beat a 270-year no-touch rule by taking it literally.
The repeatable mechanism: when the object forbids contact, scan at the highest resolution the physics allows, then let a patient model do the surface work in public. Hundreds of sealed rolls remain; the constraint is the queue.
