OpenAI and Anthropic are locked in an intensifying rivalry as both companies race to capture market share in the AI chatbot space, with Anthropic potentially surpassing OpenAI in annualized revenue by mid-2026 if current growth trends continue, according to analysis from Epoch AI.
Epoch AI data shows Anthropic has grown revenue at approximately 10 times per year since reaching $1 billion in annualized revenue, compared to OpenAI's growth rate of about 3.4 times per year. At these rates, Anthropic could overtake OpenAI in revenue by mid-2026.
The competition backdrop includes new financial data from Reuters Breakingviews. OpenAI topped $25 billion in annualized revenue as of end of February, up 25% from the end of December, according to The Information. However, the company faces massive funding needs: HSBC estimates OpenAI may require $207 billion in additional financing by 2030.
Anthropic has also burned through capital rapidly. In a recent court filing, the company's CFO said it had spent over $10 billion on training models and serving user queries, generating roughly $5 billion in cumulative revenue.
Both companies are reportedly planning IPOs as early as this year, with OpenAI targeting a $1 trillion valuation. The stakes are high: Microsoft has said 45% of its $625 billion demand backlog is tied to OpenAI, while Big Tech plans to spend approximately $650 billion on AI infrastructure this year.
