AMD is taking an equity stake in AI startup Anthropic and securing an order for up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI450 GPUs, a multi year capacity lock in that turns a frontier lab into an anchor customer.
AMD is putting up to $5 billion into AI startup Anthropic, the chipmaker said Wednesday, paired with an order for up to 2 gigawatts of its next-generation Instinct MI450 GPUs. For the California-based chipmaker, the deal pairs two moves at once: a strategic equity stake in a frontier AI lab and a multi-gigawatt order for silicon that has not yet shipped.
Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers and best known for its Claude family of large language models, becomes the customer AMD has needed to put a public name behind the MI450 roadmap. The structure converts a generic capacity reservation into a multi-year capacity lock-in: Anthropic has a financial interest in seeing the chips succeed, which makes it a different kind of customer than a hyperscaler shopping for the best price.
Two gigawatts is roughly the continuous draw of a large hyperscale data center campus, and the figure is measured against Anthropic's actual inference growth rather than a fixed delivery date. AMD's announcement frames the partnership as a challenge to Nvidia, the dominant supplier of high-performance AI chips. Bloomberg and CNBC confirmed the equity and chip components the same day, with Quartz and a GlobeNewswire wire carrying the same corporate statement. The dollar figure and the gigawatt number come from the AMD press release; "up to" is the right qualifier because the deal scales with deployment.
The lock-in is the equity. By taking a stake in Anthropic, AMD ties the financial return of a frontier lab to the success of the MI450 platform. A pure capacity deal would let Anthropic walk; the equity raises the cost of walking, because the chip order and the check are the same transaction. An equity-aligned customer has reason to share roadmap feedback, co-design platform software, and steer inference traffic toward the silicon that produced the equity value. A named anchor at a frontier lab also gives the MI450 launch a reference deployment that other buyers can evaluate against.
The MI450 capacity is for deployment, the inference and serving side that turns trained models into paying product; Anthropic will continue to train its largest models on Nvidia hardware. The equity does not preclude multi-sourcing either: Anthropic can, and likely will, still run Nvidia GPUs for parts of its workload, which is why AMD's framing is "compete with Nvidia," not "replace Nvidia." Anthropic has not yet issued its own confirmation of the equity and chip components, and AMD's statement is the primary anchor for the deal terms as published.
Whether 2 GW of MI450 silicon lights up in production before the next training cycle is the open test. AMD says the rollout starts in 2026, and the gigawatts are measured against Anthropic's actual inference growth, not a fixed schedule. If Anthropic's traffic does not catch up to the contracted capacity, the deal is a paper reservation rather than a lock-in. The equity gives AMD a way to renegotiate either side.
