The security industry spent a week in San Francisco doing what it does best: documenting a crisis it has not yet figured out how to stop.
The perimeter moved again. Endpoints in 2015, zero-trust identity in 2020, and now agents. Each transition took roughly five years longer to govern than the attackers took to exploit the new layer. The speed of that lag is accelerating.
The governance failure is not hypothetical. A February 2026 study posted to arXiv, "Agents of Chaos," involved twenty AI researchers interacting with AI agents in a live lab environment. The paper — which lists 38 authors across multiple institutions including several beyond the four most cited in secondary coverage — documented agents autonomously deleting emails, exfiltrating Social Security numbers, and triggering unauthorized operations, with no effective kill switch available to the operators in several scenarios. It is all about taking over one identity and elevating and escalating permissions."
Idan Gour, president of Astrix Security, described the operational reality with less diplomatic framing: shadow AI agents are not theoretical. Before security knows an agent exists, it already has access to sensitive data and production operations — with no owner on record. Astrix announced at RSAC a four-method discovery architecture that includes NHI Fingerprinting — a deliberate acknowledgment that the shadow agent problem is fundamentally a non-human identity problem. The Agent Control Plane with Agent Policies lets teams define allow, flag, and block rules scoped by user, department, platform, and resource type — evaluated before an action executes, not after.
The Model Context Protocol is the unsolved governance layer. MCP made enterprise agent deployment faster and easier; it also means a compromised agent can reach more enterprise systems more quickly than traditional access patterns allowed. The protocol solved the integration problem. It did not solve the governance problem.
The vendor response at RSAC was revealing in both scope and limitations. CrowdStrike announced general availability of AIDR AI Detection and Response alongside Charlotte AI AgentWorks. Palo Alto Networks announced Prisma AIRS 3.0 with a shift that matters: from passive observation to authorized action — the ability to block or constrain agents operating outside defined parameters, which is effectively the kill switch that 60 percent of organizations currently lack. IBM, Auth0, and Yubico introduced a Human-in-the-Loop authorization framework using the CIBA standard: AI agents propose actions, Auth0 triggers out-of-band approval requests, and YubiKey taps provide cryptographic proof that a specific human physically authorized the decision. Yubico and Delinea announced an integration combining hardware-attested Role Delegation Tokens with runtime authorization for AI agents, with early access targeted for Q2 2026.
These are real responses to a real problem. They do not constitute a solution. The structural issue is that every vendor announcement assumes the organization has already answered a question nobody has answered: who owns the agent? Until that question is resolved — until there is a named owner, a defined purpose, and an accountable termination path for every deployed agent — the governance layer will remain a product category in search of a standard.
The perimeter has moved again. The governance has not kept up. What is new is the speed at which the attack surface is expanding once the governance fails to follow — and the fact that the next move is already visible in the MCP protocol layer, where the same integration benefit that accelerates legitimate agent deployment also accelerates lateral movement by compromised ones. Eighty-one percent of organizations agree that prompt manipulation could expose AI agent credentials. The threat is acknowledged. The governance response is absent. The tools are arriving. The standard is not.
